Kose Kanaoka ( 巨 勢 金 岡 Kose no Kanaoka ) is the Japanese imperial artist Heian-kyo of the second half of the 9th century.

Kose Kanaoka was a supporter of the artistic styles of the Tang Dynasty in China . Despite the fact that few of his works have survived, it is known that he painted landscapes and portraits. He also founded the Kose School of Art, which was named after him. He made the first gradation of tones and the first Buddha in the style of marginalage [1] .
