Education

1981 Mann with Camera and Wearable Computer

Steve Mann received his bachelor's and master's degrees in science from McMaster University (Toronto), respectively in 1987 and 1992. After that, he continued his education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , which he graduated with a doctorate in 1997 [2] .

Ideas and Inventions

Back in school, in 1981, Steve Mann assembled his first wearable computer by adapting the 6502 microprocessor, which is carried in a backpack on a steel frame, to control cameras, flash units and other shooting equipment. The display, based on the cathode-ray viewfinder from the camera, was attached to the helmet and produced text with a resolution of 40 columns; input to the processor came from seven microswitches built into the flash handle, the entire system was powered by lead-acid batteries [3] .

Since that time, he constantly worked on improving wearable computer technology, gaining fame in particular thanks to his early development of digital glasses using the principles of augmented reality [4] . Other inventions and improvements include chirplet transform (a new mathematical system for converting signals) and (a new mathematical system for computer-converted reality) [2] , as well as a - the world's first musical instrument to operate on the principle of converting fluid vibrations into sound [5] . Mann's inventions were on display at the Smithsonian Institution , the , the London Museum of Science , the New York Museum of Modern Art, and the City Museum of Amsterdam. [2]

Steve Mann is the author of more than 200 articles, books and patents (the h-index of his publications is 44, including 29 from 2010 [6] ). He is a full-time professor at the University of Toronto . In 2013, Mann chaired the Toronto Conference of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) [4] [7] .
