History

It is possible that the first baron was Ralph Bassett of Great Weldon , who was called to Parliament in Shrewsbury on June 28, 1276 as "Radulf Bassett of Weldon." He died shortly after December 28, 1291. But documented, the first Baron of Bassett from Weldon was named his son, Richard Bassett, who was called to a parliament meeting in Salisbury on January 26, 1297. He was also called to parliament on January 6, 1299 as Richard Basset of Weldon, and was first named Lord Basset. He participated on June 24, 1314 at the Battle of Bannockburn , in which he was captured, where he died shortly before August 18 [1] .

Descendants of Ralph Bassett never were called to parliament, although de jure they are considered Barons of Bassett of Weldon. He was succeeded by the son of Ralph Bassett , de jure 2nd Baron Bassett of Weldon. He died shortly before May 4, 1341 [1] .

The last bearer of the title was Ralph Bassett , 5th Baron Bassett of Weldon, who died childless on January 9, 1400, after which the title disappeared. Sisters of his grandfather, Joan and Alienor inherited the possessions [1] .
