Content
Other names
In the US, the game was released under the name Out of This World to avoid similarities with the TV series “ Another World ”. Coincidentally, in 1987-1991, the series Out of this World appeared on the screens of the United States.
In Japan, the game is known as Outer World .
Story
The young physicist Leicester Knight Chaykin conducted a physical experiment at the synchrotron when lightning struck the facility. As a result of the reaction, the scientist was abandoned on an unknown planet, where he is exposed to many dangers. He is opposed by a variety of dangerous animals, technical traps and huge humanoids , imprisoned and trying to kill him. Among the humanoids, the hero finds a true friend. Fighting enemies and solving ingenious puzzles, the hero must survive.
Gameplay
Management is common for games of that time. Five keys are involved - arrow keys and "fire"; all the wealth of the hero’s movements is realized by skillful combination of functions.
Video plug-ins are, but mean. A lot of production scenes are fully interactive: for example, Lester runs across to another screen, and at that time a soldier hits him, and then lifts him by the scruff (the gun flies off somewhere). You need to press the space bar (Leicester kicks the soldier in the groin), pick up a pistol in the tackle and shoot the enemy.
In Another World, there is no save anywhere. The game is divided into a number of locations that can be replayed an arbitrary number of times. When the character dies, the code of the last location is issued; entering it at startup, you can resume the passage from the beginning of this location.
Game History
Development
As a cartoon artist at Chips , a computer games company, Eric Chahi got the idea to make his own game. Most of all he was impressed with the cinema game Dragon's Lair for Amiga . Shayi decided to make the game without text and without a status line - everything that the author wanted to express is expressed through gameplay and video inserts. The game used the new at that time vector morphing technology , which became the forerunner of Macromedia Flash . This reduced volume: instead of six Dragon's Lair floppies , the game completely fit on one 5-inch high-density floppy disk (1.2 megabytes).
Shayy developed the game alone - only the music was written by Jean-Francois Freitas ( fr. Jean Francois Freitas ). Development took two years. The first year went to writing the engine and initial splash screen, the second - to everything else. There was no clear development plan, a lot of Shayi invented on the go.
A video camera was used to record the video, after which keyframes were prepared by rotoscoping in a home-made vector editor. Shayi found a video player that could show still images (at that time not every model was capable of such), and connected it via a Genlock board to his Amiga . According to Shaya, the player after a while turned off, so the outline of each frame resembled a race against time. The result of this painstaking work was a very high-quality and realistic reproduction of the movement of the characters using fairly modest technical means, which undoubtedly contributed to the success of the game among users. In this regard, Another World is similar to the Prince of Persia game, built, however, on a completely different ( sprite ) graphics engine.
The scripts were programmed in the simplest assembler-like language with the beginnings of multitasking .
After Exit
The game came out under the slogan: “The earth was created six days. "Another World" took two years. " The first version for Amiga was the object of both praise and criticism. Shayi took into account all the criticism and improved the game (at the same time adding several new locations). With the help of Daniel Morais , a port for DOS was made.
After creating the game, Shayi left Delphine Software . Already without it, the sequel Heart of the Alien came out, coolly received by the players. However, the later game Flashback: Quest of Identity , made in a completely different setting , the players accepted as a continuation.
Reprints of the game
In 1995, a port for Windows 3.1 was released , with music rewritten in MIDI .
Cyril Codorgan , having disassembled the engine, reproduced it, and in 2004 an unofficial port for GameBoy Advance was released . By then, Delphine Software had gone bankrupt, and Shayi had acquired rights to the Another World brand. In 2005, Kodorgan agreed with Shia on a port for Symbian OS .
In 2006, Shayi, Codorgan, and Emmanuel Rivoire released Another World Collector's Edition for Win32 . The new version works under DirectX 8. Backgrounds (originally vector) are redrawn in a raster to a resolution of 1280 × 800.
Also in 2006, the Amiga-version of Another World became part of the Amiga Forever emulator.
In 2007, a port for Pocket PC was released.
On September 22, 2011, the game appeared in the App Store, with support for the iPhone, iPad 1-2, and iPod touch, provided they have iOS 3.1.3 and higher.
In 2013, a re-release of the game was released, which received the subtitle of the 20th Anniversary Edition [1] [2] , with a high-definition picture and several additional features for Windows and OS X. In June 2014, the game became available on PlayStation 3 , PlayStation 4 , PlayStation Vita , Wii U , Nintendo 3DS and Xbox One .
