Career

Piatti began playing tennis at the age of nine at the Villa d'Este tennis club in Cernobbio . [2] . The idea to become a coach first came to him at the age of about 20, when the club’s head coach was injured, and Piatti was asked to replace him for a short time [2] .

For several years, he studied as a coach at the Tennis Academy Nick Bolletieri [2] .

Riccardo began as a private coach for professional players in 1988. Among the tennis players whom he coached at the dawn of a coaching career, Renzo Furlan (No. 19 in the world ranking) [3] , Cristiano Caratti (No. 26) [4] and Omar Camporese (No. 18) [5] .

He began working with Ivan Lubicic in June 1997 [6] , when the Croat was 954th in the world [7] . These relationships continued until the end of Lyubichich’s professional gaming career in 2012. Lyubichich made tremendous progress working with Piatti, at one time being the third racket of the world [7] .

From autumn 2005 to June 2006, he also coached Novak Djokovic, who was promising at that time. Djokovic broke up with him because of Piatti's refusal to deal with him full time. In 2011, Piatti said that even then he knew that Djokovic could become the number one in the world at the level of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer [8] .

In 2017, he founded his Academy in Bordighera called the Piatti Tennis Center, officially opening it in April 2018. [9]

In August 2019, it was announced that Riccardo Piatti would become the new mentor of Maria Sharapova [10] , who had previously conducted a training camp at his Academy [11] .
