Levon Hovhannesovich Hakobyan ( November 7, 1944 - August 29, 2018 ) - Soviet and Russian handball coach, honored coach of the USSR and the RSFSR [1] [2] .

Biography

Born November 7, 1944 in Tehran (Persia, now Iran). He lived in Volgograd and Tolyatti . He graduated from the Volgograd Institute of Physical Culture and Sports [1] [2] .

From 1972 to 1997 he worked as the head coach of the regional youth sports school in the city of Volgograd, in the teams of Burevestnik and Urozhai in Krasnodar, and in the Volgograd clubs Meliorator and Rotor. From 1997 to 2011, he was a coach and president of the Volgograd club, which at different times was called “Rotor”, “Aqua”, “Dynamo-Aqua” and “Dynamo”. From July 2013 to 2018 he trained the Togliatti Lada [1] [2] .

Under the leadership of Akopyan, Dynamo won six Russian championships, won the EGF Challenge Cup (City Cup) and the European Super Cup; “Lada” was invariably among the winners of the Russian Championship (four silver and one bronze medal), and in 2014 won the EHF Cup [1] .

In 1993-2003 he coached the Russian women's youth handball team , which won the world championships in Bulgaria and the Republic of Macedonia. In 1995-1996 he coached the Russian women's team. In 2015, under his leadership, the Russian team won the Summer Universiade in Gwangju , in the same year Hakobyan entered the coaching staff of Evgeny Trefilov , head coach of the Russian team: the team won the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro a year later [1] [2] . In 2018, he led the team until the age of 18, who won the World Cup in Polish Kielce [3] .

Honored Coach of the RSFSR, Honored Coach of the USSR. He was awarded the medal of the order "For Merit to the Fatherland" I degree (May 24, 2017) [4] . The best coach of the Russian Super League of the 2017/2018 season according to the Russian Handball Federation [1] .

Under the leadership of Akopyan, about 20 honored masters of sports of Russia and several dozen masters of sports of Russia of international class were trained, among which stand out:

  • Chausova, Elena Petrovna ( world champion in 2001 ) [2]

Died on the night of August 28-29, 2018. He was buried in Volgograd [1] [2] .
