Monument History
The author of the monument is the sculptor Evgeny Yablonsky (this is his first and so far the only work).
The monument consists of two figures - female and male, and a woman is trying to keep a man sliding down, mortally wounded in the back.
The monument was created at the expense of the Communist Party of Ukraine and the inhabitants of Crimea [1] . At the base of the monument there is an inscription: “ In memory of the victims of the Soviet people who fell at the hands of Nazi accomplices - a soldier of the OUN - UPA and other collaborators ” [2] .
As the first secretary of the Crimean Republican Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine Leonid Grach stated at the unveiling of the monument, in Western Ukraine more than 4 thousand Crimeans, representatives of peaceful professions, died “at the hands of Nazi collaborators” [3] .
During the opening of the monument, a clash occurred between representatives of the Communist Party of Ukraine and activists of the Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine , who set up campaign tents on the square where the monument is located [4] .
A check by the prosecutor's office of the Republic of Crimea on the legality of the allotment of a land plot for the installation of the monument [4] did not reveal any violations.
On September 25, 2007, an act of vandalism was carried out in relation to the monument - the unknown (according to the representatives of the Communist Party of Ukraine, “militants from the organization VO Svoboda ”) filled the sculpture with red paint [5] . Later it was established that these were indeed nationalists, headed by E. Leonov, the head of the Crimean branch of the VO “Liberty”. [6] [7] .
Opinions on the Monument
Eugene Yablonsky, sculptor, author of the monument:
For me, an Orthodox person, the theme of memory of those killed is very important. After all, there were killed not only and not so much warriors as teachers, agronomists, doctors, journalists. Regarding the protests, I can only say that they are sick people. There are killers and their victims in this life. I put a monument to the victims. Any sane person understands this. And I see nothing forbidden or criminal in this. On the contrary, one must know this and always remember this [8] .
The leader of the Crimean "Movement" Leonid Pilunsky :
This is a 100% provocation of the Communists. They only provocations and lived. Because more cynicism is hard to imagine. A party that in 1920 killed only 185,000 Russians in the Crimea. Crimea has absolutely nothing to do with the OUN-UPA. There was only one detachment, which was destroyed in the winter of 1942. And they fought against Hitler [9] .
Original text (in Ukrainian)Tse stovіdsotkova provocation commune. The stinks of provocation and lived. Therefore, greater censorship is important. The party, a yak in 1920, roц tіlki rosіyan in Krimu was affected by 185,000 people. Cream is not until the OUN-UPA absolutely zhodny vіdnoshennya. There’s only one zagin, a fee for the 1942 ths. I stink fought against Hitler.
