Description
Fore wing length 45–52 mm. Wingspan of 100-125 mm. Fore wings with whitish and pink wavy stripes and a large dark purple longitudinal spot at the inner corner; hind wings blackish from base to middle, and greenish brown from middle to edge; both colors are separated by a white stripe; the underside of the wings is greenish. The chest is greenish-gray: the abdomen is olive-green on top, the first three segments are bordered with white hairs, the next have oblique olive-colored stripes on each side.
Range
It was recorded in the temporary breeding zone: in the North Caucasus, in Transcaucasia to the western coast of the Caspian Sea, along the shores of the Sea of Azov, in the Crimea, and Moldova. Most often found on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus. In the middle of the 19th century, Becker in Sarept (now Volgograd territory) noted the unexpected appearance of an oleander hawthorn caterpillar on a room oleander exposed in the garden in summer.
Flies to southern Europe, leaves offspring there, from the south of the countries located the range includes all of Africa and India, the coastal countries of the Mediterranean Sea, the entire Middle East, including Turkey, Iraq, Iran, the south of Turkmenistan (flights), Afghanistan.
The boundary of the permanent range is determined by the physiology of the species that does not withstand winter cold.
Caterpillars
The caterpillar is green or yellowish; on each side of the third segment along a dot-like ocular spot with a white middle and a black-blue edge; behind the third segment is a white longitudinal line; spiracles with yellow rim, caudal horn short, flattened. It is found on oleanders and sometimes on a periwinkle ( Vinca ). Caterpillars pupate on the ground near oleanders, in a cocoon consisting of fragments of leaves.
Doll
Pupa elongated, brown in color, with a black spot on each spiracle.
