HYLAS-1

HYLAS-1 ( HYLAS is an acronym for Highly Adaptable Satellite ) is a British communications satellite in geostationary orbit. It was launched by the European launch vehicle Ariane 5 from the Guyana Space Center at Kourou in French Guiana [1] . It is located at orbital position 33.5 ° west longitude. Provides high definition television (HDTV) and broadband communications services. [2] [3] The satellite helps solve the problem of poor broadband coverage in many parts of Europe that have less developed terrestrial infrastructure.

Construction

HYLAS was built by EADS Astrium for the British telecommunications company Avanti Communications Plc. The development of the satellite was supported by an investment of £ 23 million from the British National Space Center ( BNSC ) [4] .

Launch

Avanti acquired for the HYLAS satellite a launch into the geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) on the Falcon 9 launch vehicle . This purchase in September 2007 made Avanti the first customer to purchase a commercial geostationary launch from SpaceX [5] In July 2009, Arianespace announced that HYLAS would be launched in 2010 “using Ariane 5 or Soyuz Launcher” from Arianespace [6] [ 7] . Avanti previously criticized Arianespace as overly expensive, but the move to Arianespace was motivated by potential customers' concerns about the launch risks associated with Falcon 9. In addition, additional financial assets became available, including £ 10.7 million in investments in the Artes telecommunications development program. from British ESA investors [8] .

HYLAS-1 was successfully launched at 18:41 GMT on November 26, 2010.

Tasks

HYLAS is based on the Indian Space Research Organization's I-2K small satellite platform as part of a collaboration between EADS Astrium and ISRO / Antrix. [9]

The HYLAS payload consists of two Ku-band transponders intended primarily for HDTV , and six Ka-band transponders operating in the Omni - directional mode of a satellite dish , which makes it possible to make from 150,000 to 300,000 simultaneous broadband Internet connections. The HYLAS satellite had a launch mass of about 2100 kg and an initial power of 3.5 kW. [10]

Orbital position

In June 2019, the HYLAS orbital position was adjusted to 18.3 ° West .
