Shchilov-Pokrovsky Monastery or Shilov-Pokrovsky Monastery is a male monastery that existed from the XIV to XVIII century and was located in the Novgorod district of the Novgorod region , southeast of Novgorod, on the right bank of the Volkhov River , at a distance of about 4.5 kilometers from Novgorod Kremlin , in the tract, called in ancient times Dubn or Dubenka.
The monastery was founded in 1310. According to legend, the founder of the monastery was posil Shchil. The monastery church was consecrated in honor of the Feast of the Intercession . In 1387, the monastery was mentioned among 24 monasteries burnt by the Novgorodians themselves during a campaign on Dmitry Donskoy in Novgorod. In 1615, the monastery was again destroyed by the Swedes during the Russian-Swedish war , in 1669 the monastery was renewed. In 1681, the Shchilov Monastery was assigned to the St. George Monastery , and in 1685 the Shchilov-Pokrovsky Monastery was assigned to the Novgorod Bishop's House. In 1725 the monastery was completely demolished; his bell tower was moved to the Yuriev Monastery, and the logs of the Intercession Church and buildings were carried away with water.
In Russian literature, the legend about the foundation of the monastery was reflected in the Tale of the Shchil posadnik , created in the 15th-16th centuries.
