Song Subject
According to Beck Hansen:
| The text is my ridicule of the absurdity of entrenched ideas about what a man can do and what a woman can do. Most soul music is based on masculinity and strength, but it also has a pronounced sensitive side. Thus, you have a macho macho appearance and, at the same time, emotional openness, which is also characteristic of women. I wanted to have fun with this topic, slightly increasing the contrast and trying not to get bogged down in moral values and any psychotic nonsense [3] . |
The author also spoke about the musical component:
| My main interest in using wind instruments was connected with the desire for a more interesting result, since a lot of music is built on heavy guitar riffs . I was looking for other ways to get this “musical muscle”. Many bands rely solely on guitars to pump sound, but I thought it would be more interesting to add trumpets instead. I think the sound of the song was influenced by the Los Angeles Rams . I was a fan of them as a child, and this wind section just reminded me of football matches on Monday evening of 1978 [3] . |
Musically video
The music video shot by Beck himself is partly a tribute to the film Mr. Freedom [4] . Musician Jack Black starred in the video as a member of the Vision Warrior Men's Circle men's collection, along with Neil Strauss and Justin Meldal-Johnsen. [5] There are several versions of the video. The original (once posted on Beck's website) lasts more than 18 minutes and has an expanded entry for the men's congregation. Subsequent versions had an edited introduction and ending, and the long speech of the character Jack Black was removed from them during the meeting.
In popular culture
In 2004, Sexx Laws was used in a Renault Twingo ad. In addition, the song was played on the soundtrack of the animated series Futurama (episode Bendin 'in the Wind ) and Daria .
