History and Description

Building

Since 1973, the local Association of Museums of Contemporary Art (Association pour un Musée d'Art Moderne, AMAN) has sought to establish a museum of contemporary art in the city of Geneva . As a result, only on September 22, 1994 the museum was opened in its current location; its first director was Christian Bernard (born 1950), who was replaced by Lionel Bovier (born 1970) at the turn of 2015 and 2016. AMAN has also opened the Association des amis du MAMCO, an association of friends of MAMCO, which today has about 1,000 members. Since January 1, 2005, the museum has been managed by the public foundation FONDAMCO, owned by the Museum Fund of the city and canton of Geneva .

The MAMCO museum is located on the premises of the former Geneva factory Société genevoise d'instruments de physique (SIP), which produced scientific instruments - the building complex was called Bâtiment d'art contemporain (Bac). There is also an art gallery Center for Contemporary Art (CAC), which since 2010 has been associated with the Center for Contemporary Photo Art (Center pour l'Image Contemporaine, CIC).

The building that MAMCO is today in was the site of SIP, a company founded in 1862 by Auguste de la Rive and Marc Thury. Thanks to the development in 1921 of a boring-and-boring machine , which made it possible to produce machines and equipment with an accuracy of a thousandth of a millimeter, SIP made a significant contribution to the serial mechanical production of scientific equipment - at some point the company occupied a prominent place in the global machine-building market. Due to economic problems, in 1983 SIP sold the factory building, which interested artists and art lovers. As a result, in 1987, the city of Geneva acquired parts of this real estate to create an exhibition space in the city center. Architecturally, the building did not undergo significant changes - not only for financial reasons, but also because Bernard wanted to preserve the original industrial space as much as possible.

As part of the idea of “ desacralizing ” art and the space in which it is presented, in 1994 - three months before the official opening of MAMCO - a temporary exhibition “Le Musée est dans l'Escalier” was organized in its premises. As an exhibition space, even a staircase was used.

Collection

Over the past 20 years, more than six hundred exhibitions have been held at MAMCO. The museum has a permanent collection - it consists of 2,000 works of contemporary and contemporary art , which are presented on four floors with a total exhibition area of 3,500 m². The first floor is dedicated to the art of the 1990s and 2000s; the second is given for work created in the 1980s and 1990s; the third level includes works of the mid-20th century (art of the 1960s and 1970s); the fourth floor is for special temporary exhibitions, which are held approximately every four months. Among other things, the museum has the works of Sia Armajani (Dictionary for Building, 1974-1975) and Martin Kippenberger (Moma's Project avec des œuvres de Lukas Baumewerd, Hubert Kiecol, Christopher Wool, Michael Krebber, Ulrich Strothjohann). The apartment (“L'Appartement”) is separately exposed, in which the art critic Ghislain Mollet-Viéville (born 1945) lived and worked in 1975-1991.

Bernard proposed not to follow either a chronological or personal approach in organizing exhibitions. Over the 20 years of his leadership, he developed guidelines that the museum is trying to maintain today: in particular, Bernard wanted to create a closer relationship between museum work and visitors; He also wanted to emphasize the connection between the works themselves. In his view, the museum is more likely a home (intimate place) than a public place.

Since its founding, MAMCO has published a series of publications on contemporary art, trying to contribute to the study of this phenomenon. The museum supports both the projects of individual artists, as well as works on the history and theoretical aspects of contemporary art. The MAMCO Museum and its collection of contemporary art are listed in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National Importance (highest category “A”).
