Story

At the beginning of the work, the author introduces us to an ordinary rural family, where the elder brother - Sergei Znamensky, who returned as an invalid (shell shock) after the First World War , decides to make real heroes from the painful younger brothers - Seraphim and George. Starting in the summer with daily morning runs to the river with swimming in it, they continued this hardening in the winter.

Over the course of twelve years, Seraphim and George will strengthen their physical form using this technique. Then, at the insistence of Sergei, the brothers will move to Moscow and come to this sport.

The sudden and sensational appearance on the treadmill of the brothers Seraphim and George Znamensky, who in just one year went the way from unknown runners to the country's champions, is still a mystery to many.

Their sporting achievements seem all the more incomprehensible, if we take into account the age at which the brothers first came to the stadium - Seraphim was 27 years old, and George - 30.

The results of serious training were significant victories, both on the native treadmill and in world stadiums. The Znamensky brothers were the first to overcome the “historical” milestones in the development of our athletics: 4-minute - by 1,500 meters, 9-minute - by 3,000 meters, 15-minute - by 5,000 meters and 31-minute - by 10,000 meters. With their records, they advanced the achievements of Soviet athletics to international class results.

Having completed his sports career, the Znamensky brothers received a medical education and became sports doctors. And during World War II, they worked in hospitals, saving wounded soldiers. From the documentary novel by A. Slutsky “The Znamensky Brothers”, readers will learn about the most, perhaps, the most popular athletes of the thirties, whose names are associated with a whole era in our sport. The true story of the rise of the Znamensky brothers to the heights of glory is even more unusual and fascinating than the legends that tell about them.
