Pavel Althamer ( Polish. Paweł Althamer ; born May 12, 1967 , Warsaw , Poland ) is a Polish contemporary left - wing artist [3] , sculptor , performance artist , actionist , author of installations and videos, member of several art groups [3] [4 ] ] . Althamer's solo exhibitions have been held since 1991 in Warsaw, Berlin , Paris , New York and other cities. In 2004, Althamer received the prestigious Vincent Van Gogh Prize; in January 2010, the artist received a special prize for the Passport Prize from Polityka magazine [4] ; in 2015 he was awarded the Officers Cross of the Order of the Renaissance of Poland [ 5] .

He lives in Warsaw, where since 1993 he has been teaching ceramics for the Nowolipie group, which unites people with multiple sclerosis , for whom art is a form of therapy and rehabilitation. He participated in projects to help difficult adolescents in the Warsaw district of Prague-Pulnoc [4] [6] .
Creativity
In 1988-1993 he studied at the Faculty of Sculpture at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts with Grzegorz Kowalski [4] .
Many of Althamer's works are sculptures or objects in which the sculptural principle is guessed, often created using atypical (for sculpture) and modern materials [3] [4] . The artist’s early figures were made of grass, straw, animal guts [4] , and his project “Venetians” for the 55th Venice Biennale is a series of anthropomorphic plastic statues [3] .
During exhibitions, Althamer often experiments with space, modifies the interiors of the galleries with which he works. For example, during his first exhibition “Exhibition” in 1991 at the Galeria art gallery in Plock, he returned to the premises its original function. Althamer took everything out of the gallery, washed the floors, scrubbed the white paint from the stove and brought everything necessary for the gallery to become an apartment again [4] .
In many performances and films, Althamer conducted radical experiments on his own body and psyche, many of them were created in an altered state of consciousness [3] [4] . For example, in the film series “The So-Called Waves, and Other Phenomena of the Mind” (2003-2004), the artist, using LSD , hash , hypnosis, and other means, explores different ways of going beyond the mind to expand his perception of reality [4] .
