Tidal (written in capital letters as TIDAL ) is a music subscription service, podcasts and streaming video that combines lossless sound and high-definition music videos with exclusive content and special features for music. Tidal was launched in 2014 by the Norwegian public company Aspiro.
Having distribution agreements with all three major labels and many indie [1] , Tidal claims to offer access to over 60 million tracks and 250,000 music videos. [2] It offers two levels of service: Tidal Premium (lossy quality) and Tidal HiFi (lossless CD quality - based on FLAC 16-bit / 44.1 kHz - and MQA). Tidal claims to pay the highest percentage of royalties to music artists and songwriters in the music streaming market. [3]
In March 2015, Aspiro was acquired by Jay-Z Project Panther Bidco Ltd., [4] which resumed the service with a massive marketing campaign. Some music artists changed their social media profile design to blue and posted the phrase “#TIDALforAll” on Facebook , Twitter and Instagram . [5] The press conference on March 30, 2015 was attended by Jay-Z and 15 other musicians who were co-owners and stakeholders of Tidal. [6] The service was advertised as the first streaming service owned by the artist.
While some observers praised the impressive high sound quality, lossless (except MQA) and higher subscription fees, which would lead to higher fees for artists and songwriters, others felt that the high subscription fees and exclusive Tidal content from participating artists can lead to a greater spread of musical piracy. Tidal claims to have over 3 million subscribers [7] although the veracity of these claims, as well as their reported streaming numbers, have been called into question. [8] As of December 2018, Tidal has been operating in 53 countries. [9] On January 23, 2017, Sprint Corporation bought 33% of Tidal for $ 200 million. [ten]

History
Separating from WiMP, which was launched in Norway in 2010 and later available in Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Poland, Aspiro first launched the Tidal brand in the UK, USA and Canada on October 28, 2014. The launch was supported by Sonos and 15 others.
producing home audio as integration partners. [11] In January 2015, Tidal was launched in five other European countries: Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. [1] It is currently available in 52 countries.
Aspiro was purchased by Project Panther Bidco Ltd. (owned by Jay-Z ) for SEK $ 466 million ( USD $ 56.2 million) in January 2015. [12] Prior to the acquisition of ASPIRO, Jay-Z told Billboard in an interview that he was willing to work with other streaming services to implement your vision. “We talked with each service and explored all the options,” J-Z said, we want to be independent. And this has become our best offer, and not a simple one, mind you, ”he concluded. [13]
On April 16, 2015, it became known that Tidal was closing its original Aspiro offices in Stockholm, firing all Swedish employees and current CEO Andy Chen. [14] The company declined to comment on the closure of offices, but confirmed that Peter Tonstad succeeded Andy Chen as CEO. [15] In September 2015, Tidal began selling digital downloads and CDs . [16] In December 2015, Tidal appointed Jeff Toyg as CEO of the company. Then Jeff Toyg left the company in March 2017. [17] Richard Sanders was declared CEO in August 2017. [18]
In January 2017, the company announced a partnership with the British company Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) to provide master quality records - authenticated and continuous versions (usually 96 kHz / 24 bits) with the highest possible resolution for its HiFi subscribers. Tidal is the only streaming company offering this MQA service. MQA is a lossy format.
On January 23, 2017, U.S. mobile operator Sprint announced the purchase of a 33 percent stake in Tidal [19] saying that Sprint will offer exclusive content to Sprint customers. [ten]
In September 2017, Tidal became an app partner for the Mercedes-Benz web portal. [20] American rapper Nicki Minaj starred in a commercial promoting a partnership with Mercedes. [21]
In 2017, Tidal announced a series of podcasts to launch the same year. [22] American rappers Fat Joe and Joey Bada $$, each of which accepts "Coca Vision" and "47 minutes," respectively. [23] [24]
Platform Exclusivity
The key to selling Tidal in competition with other streaming services such as Spotify and Pandora Radio is the exclusive content already available and expected in the future from current artists who are co-owners of the company, as well as others. Exclusive content available at the Tidal restart included Rihanna's single "Bitch Better Have My Money", the debut television appearance of The White Stripes , " Daft Punk's Electroma" (2006), and playlists personally curated by Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Arcade Fire, and Coldplay . [25] Tidal said on his official Twitter page that "a lot of exclusive content is on the way." [26]
Artist Property
Tidal is currently owned by Jay-Z and many other successful music artists, making it the first artist-owned streaming service in the world. [13] The idea of a streaming platform owned by the artist was stated as “restoring the value of music by launching a service belonging to the artists”. [27] During the press conference, Jay-Z, Beyoncé , Rihanna , Kanye West , Nicki Minaj , Daft Punk , Jack White , Madonna , Arcade Fire , Alicia Keyes , Asher , Chris Martin , Calvin Harris , deadmau5 , Jason Aldin and J Cole was presented on stage as "TIDAL owners." [6] [28] [29] Eric Harvey from Pitchfork said of artists who are co-owners of the service: "This is 1% of the world's pop music now, these are artists who do not respond to record labels, do not respond to corporations." [13]
On March 30, 2015, a press conference on the official re-launch of Tidal was held at Skylight at Moynihan Station in New York . [30] The conference began with a brief introduction and explanation of Tidal. After introducing the aforementioned sixteen Tidal co-owners on stage, recording artist Alicia Keyes performed on behalf of the artists and on behalf of Tidal. She stated: “So, we gathered in front of you on this day, March 30, 2015, in a single voice in the hope that today will be another of those moments in time, a moment that will forever change the course of the history of music.” The keys also described the event as “ high school graduation". [31] At the end of the press conference, all the artists on stage signed a declaration that spoke of the Tidal mission. [32] Tidal claimed to have received 100,000 new subscribers after a press conference featuring artists involved in the service. [33]
In June 2015, Lil Wayne joined the list of services as a co-owner of the artist, starting a partnership by releasing an exclusive track for the service called “Glory”. [34] On February 23, 2016, TI joined the service registry as the last co-owner, starting a partnership by releasing “Money Talk”, a single from its tenth album Dime Trap, exclusively on the service, and the album was broadcast live from Greenbriar Mall in Atlanta . [35]
On July 1, 2017, it became known that hip-hop musician Kanye West left Tidal as a co-owner and shareholder after a financial dispute with his board of directors [36] regarding compensation for his contribution to the company. Kanye West later demanded a $ 3 million payment from Tidal. USA for his participation in marketing events, video production and for the fact that he released his 2016 album “The Life of Pablo” , which caused a 1.5 million increase in the number of Tidal subscribers. Shortly after the release. [37] In response, Tidal stated that Kanye West was unable to deliver the videos that he promised under his contract. [38]
Releases
In April 2015, the Tidal exclusive included Beyoncé releasing a video of her performance of “Die With You,” an never-before-heard original song dedicated to her and Jay-Z's wedding anniversary, Madonna is releasing a teaser of her upcoming music video at that time for " Ghosttown "and Rihanna introduced a brand new song and music video for" American Oxygen ". [39] [40]
In January 2016, Tidal released Rihanna Anti 's album as a one-week exclusive stream. [41]
In February 2016, Tidal released the exclusive first release of Kanye West The Life of Pablo . West also promised that the album "will never appear on any other services [except Tidal]", and it will never be sold. [42]
On April 23, 2016, Beyoncé released her second visual album, Lemonade , which aired exclusively on Tidal. On April 25, it was available for purchase by track or album on Amazon Music and in the iTunes store, and on May 6, to physical retailers.
2017 Jay Z 4:44 debuted on Tidal. [43] The following year, Jay Z released a joint album with Beyoncé, Everything Is Love , via Tidal. [44]
Livestreaming
Tidal regularly broadcasts live and on-demand concerts, including the Made in America festival and TIDAL X Brooklyn. [45] [46]
In 2018, Tidal Livestreamed Hot 97 is the 25th annual Summer Jam. [47]
Also in 2018, Tidal partnered with the Equal Justice Initiative to broadcast the Peace and Justice concert. [48] The concert was dedicated to the opening of the National Peace and Justice Memorial and Heritage Museum, both located in Montgomery, Alabama .
Reception
Shortly after the launch and press conference of Tidal, the mobile version of the service hit the top 20 of the iPhone Apps chart in the USA. After two weeks later, after criticism for the “marketing campaign out of touch”, the application has already dropped out of the top 700 ratings of the same list. [49]
Praise
Glenn Peoples of Billboard writes that Tidal is a good thing for the music industry. He said that the US streaming market needs a “bum in the ass” when he considers the growth rate of streaming broadcasts from 2014 to 2015. People also noted that increased competition in the streaming market is good, as it can lead to "greater growth." spreading innovation. "He concluded that a service such as Tidal, which advertises the payment of a sufficient amount of royalties to both artists and songwriters, will cause the industry as a whole to solve its problems with streaming fees. [50]
Criticism
We are writing for USA Today, the site 'Micah Peters has released a list of "3 reasons why the new Tidal streaming service Jay-Z is stupid." The article focused on the fact that the advanced model of high-quality sound without loss was "overpriced for the average listener." Peters is worried that most listeners do not have the necessary advanced headphones to distinguish between normal and high-quality sound. The article also stated that the price of $ 20 was not reasonable for the mass market. [51]
Recording artist Lily Allen has expressed her opinion of Tidal on her official Twitter account . She was afraid that the high price of Tidal, as well as the massive popularity of co-owners of artists could lead to the undermining of the music industry and the growth of piracy. She said: "I really love Jay-Z, but Tidal is (so) expensive compared to other absolutely good streaming services, he works with the biggest artists ... Made them exclusive to Tidal (do I think so right?), People go swarming back to pirated sites en masse. " [52]
Jay-Z responded to freestyle criticism during a Tidal X concert: Jaÿ-Z B-Sides [53] . He compares Tidal with Apple and Nike and says that Tidal has been hypocritically criticized.
Kanye West’s decision to initially release its album The Life of Pablo as an exclusive streaming video was criticized by fans who believed that streaming exclusivity could contribute to piracy. The album was pirated more than 500,000 times as of February 17, 2016. [54] West later made the album available for streaming on competing services. [55] In July 2017, West terminated the contract with Tidal, stating that the service owed him $ 3 million. [56]
Finance and Royalty
One artist claimed that Aspiro / Tidal's artist fees per track are now more than three times the Spotify fees, but these fees may be reduced to provide an adequate return on investment . [57] Jay-Z commented in an interview with Billboard that artists are paid more if they broadcast on Tidal than on Spotify, saying: “Will artists make more money? Even if it means less profit for our profit? Absolutely". [13] In the same interview, he also emphasized that this service is for people “at the bottom of the food chain.” [13]
On February 27, 2016, Yesh Music, LLC and John Emanuele of The American Dollar filed a class action lawsuit in the amount of US $ 5 million, claiming that Tidal had not yet paid compensation to the group for any royalties received from the group’s 116 streaming songs. The lawsuit also accused Tidal of using the wrong numbers to pay artists, and also cut the same people by 35%. The Tidal response says that they really completely updated all of the group’s royalties and removed the indicated intellectual property from their servers. [58] [59] [60]
Polemic
In January 2017, the Norwegian newspaper Dagens Næringsliv ("Today's Business") reported that it received internal documents revealing fewer subscribers than were publicly announced by Tidal and its owners, and in September 2015 it had only 350,000 users (which contradicts the statement Jay-Z, that the service had a million users) and 850,000 subscribers by March 2016, and not 3 million claimed by the service (which could be inflated, including users who used the free trial). [61] [62]
In May 2018, Dagens Næringsliv published a report accusing Tidal of intentionally falsifying streaming numbers for Beyoncé Lemonade and Kanye West 's Life of Pablo albums and, consequently, of paying high fees to artists of label artists. The newspaper backed up its report with a comprehensive study at the Center for Cyber and Information Security at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Jovik. According to Variety , a music service that "rarely shares its data publicly," being an exclusive streaming platform for both albums, "said the West album was broadcast 250 million times in the first 10 days of its release in February 2016, while claiming that he has only 3 million subscribers - a statement that would mean that each subscriber played the album on average eight times a day, and Beyoncé’s album was broadcast 306 million times in the first 15 days of its release in April 2016. " [63]
The company denies any wrongdoing. [64] Following the allegations, the Norwegian collection society TONO filed a formal police complaint against Tidal. Danish music organization Koda has also announced an independent audit of Tidal data. [65]
