DescriptionThe body is elongated, rounded in cross section; slightly compressed laterally; covered with cycloid scales . Pointed snout. The mouth is large, oblique; the lower jaw protrudes somewhat forward. The male on the back of the head has a black spot with blue spots, while the female does not have these marks. Eyes are directed forward. The eye above is closed by the iris, consisting of numerous elongated strands. The dorsal fin has 3–8 hard and 43–44 soft rays. In males, the hard rays of the dorsal fin are not elongated. Females have a black spot in front of the dorsal fin. In the anal fin there is one prickly and 34–42 soft rays. Pectoral fins with 11-15 soft rays. In abdominal fins 1 prickly and 5 soft rays. In males, the prickly ray is elongated, while in females it is short. The lateral line is complete with 52-59 scales, stretching along the middle of the body; at the back of the scales have deep V-shaped notches. In males, clear blue spots with a black border stretch along the lateral line [2] [3] .
The maximum body length is 15 cm [4] .
BiologyMarine bottom fish. They live at a depth of 6 to 35 m. They feed on zooplankton above the sandy bottom at a distance of one to three meters above the ground. In case of danger, they lightly burrow upside down in the sand; then unfold in the ground and reappear on the surface of the ground in another place.
Reproduction
Based on morphometric and histological indices, it was established that blue-sand sandworms are consecutive protoginous hermaphrodites . At the beginning of the life cycle, all individuals are represented exclusively by females, and then some of the adult fish change sex and become males. Sex change occurs when the body length of females is 80-120 mm. Spawning off the coast of Japan in the summer months. Fertilization is external. Caviar and larvae are pelagic [3] .
DistributionDistributed in the western Pacific Ocean off the coast of Japan and China . Discovered in the waters of the Chesterfield archipelago . Found in the coastal waters of countries: Indonesia (including Bali ), the Philippines , Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia [5] .
