Biography

Native to Massachusetts . Had vision problems. In the last grade of school, his mother was even forced to read lessons to him aloud [3] [4] , then poor eyesight prevented the young man from entering Harvard [5] . At the age of about 10, he became friends with Chester Daniel French , then also a boy. His father was a hunter and amateur taxidermist who demonstrated his young skills to young William [3] . Brewster’s father supplied his son with a gun and taught him to shoot, which allowed him to get birds for study (a common phenomenon in the 19th century). By 1865, he already had a collection, which also included nests and eggs of birds. Brewster wrote down his observations in detail, which he continued to do until the end of his life. To encourage his interest, the father presented Ordithological Biography to his son Audubon . [5] .

From 1880 he worked as an assistant responsible for the collection of birds of the Boston Society for Natural History. From 1885 he became curator of mammals and birds at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University , where he worked until the end of his life. He devoted much time to his own private ornithological museum. In 1896-1913 Brewster was president of the Audubon Society of Massachusetts. This group, with more than half of its members being women, has successfully lobbied for the adoption of local environmental laws.

The name of William Brewster is the memorial medal awarded by the American Ornithological Union [6] .
