Paul Leopold Friedrich ( German: Paul Leopold Friedrich ; January 26, 1864 - January 15, 1916 ) is a German surgeon and bacteriologist born in the city of Stadtroda , Saxe-Altenburg .

Biography
In 1888, he received his doctorate from the University of Leipzig , and worked as a young assistant under the direction of Robert Koch (1843-1910) in the Imperial Department of Health in Berlin . Since 1894, he worked as a private assistant professor of surgery in Leipzig , where in 1896 he became an assistant professor. He later worked as a professor at the universities of Greifswald (since 1903), Marburg (since 1907) and Koenigsberg (since 1911). [4] In Greifswald, he succeeded August Beer (1861–1949) as director of the University of Surgery Hospital. The two famous assistants to Friedrich were Ferdinand Sauerbruch (1875–1951) and Martin Kirchner (1879–1942). [5] [6]
Friedrich was a pioneer in many aspects of surgery, including work in the field of thoracic surgery (lungs). He is remembered for his research into wound healing and his efforts to reduce bacterial infections . Through experiments, he demonstrated the importance of treatment (removal of infected tissue) for six hours. [7] He also did a great deal of work related to diseases that included peritonitis and tuberculosis . He is credited with introducing the practice of using seamless rubber gloves during surgery.
