Charles Coffin Sims (April 14, 1937 - October 23, 2017 [1] [2] ) is an American mathematician best known for his work on the theory of finite groups . [3] Together with he discovered , which belongs to sporadic groups . The program developed by Sims for the analysis of groups of permutations made it possible to prove the existence and . Sims is one of the founders of computational group theory and the creators of the Schreier-Sims algorithm .
Sims was born and raised in and graduated from the University of Michigan . [3] He continued his studies at Harvard University under the supervision of John Thompson . He defended his thesis in 1963. In the thesis he found a close upper and lower estimate for the number of P-groups . From 1965 to 2007 he taught at Rutgers University, New Brunswick . During this period, he held, in particular, the post of head of the department (1982–84) and junior vice rector for computer planning (1984–87). In 2007, he left the university and moved to St. Petersburg, Florida . [four]
