[3] Together with he discovered , which belongs to sporadic groups . The program developed by Sims for the analysis of groups of permutations made it possible to prove the existence and . Sims is one of the founders of computational group theory and the creators of the Schreier-Sims algorithm .

Sims was born and raised in and graduated from the University of Michigan . [3] He continued his studies at Harvard University under the supervision of John Thompson . He defended his thesis in 1963. In the thesis he found a close upper and lower estimate for the number of P-groups . From 1965 to 2007 he taught at Rutgers University, New Brunswick . During this period, he held, in particular, the post of head of the department (1982–84) and junior vice rector for computer planning (1984–87).
