The song marked a serious change in style compared to the hardcore, aggressive style of Biggie's early work. The music used the softer aesthetics of the West Coast G-funk, while Biggie began to be perceived as a new character adored by women. Producer Easy Mo Bee noted: “Suddenly his voice calmed down. It became his new vocal style. ” [1] Spin Magazine called the song "East Coast's long-awaited response to the J-funk manifestos of Dr. Dre. " [2]
The song reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart , four places on the Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Songs chart, and one on the Hot Rap Singles chart . She also ranked 63rd on the UK Singles Chart in the UK [3] . The single was certified as “ platinum ” on May 23, 1995 [4] .
Big Poppa was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Solo Rap Performance at the 38th 1996 Grammy Awards .
The song was sampled more than 80 times by artists of various genres [5] , used in films such as Race , Hardball , Super Peppers , Notorius , the television series Assimilation Difficulties and the talk show Late in the Night with Jimmy Fallon .
The official remix, released in 1995 with Jermain Dupree , is called “Big Poppa (So So Def Remix)”, it has similar lyrics (Dupri replaces Puff Daddy), and also Biggie has a new third verse. This remix was released as a single.

Background and content
The name of the song is based on one of the numerous nicknames of The Notorious BIG The line “I love it when you call me Big Poppa” Dolly My Baby, released in 1993. The song also contains the famous sample from the song The Isley Brothers "Between The Sheets" (1983). The song also has a reference to the label artist Bad Boy - Craig Mack in the line “now check it, I got more Mack than Craig in the bed ...” (from English - “Check, I have more skills in the bedroom than Craig’s” ).
In the April 2004 issue of XXL magazine, the producer and member of The Hitmen’s super-producer group, Nashiem Myrick, said that the beat was originally created for rapper Mr. Cheeks from The Lost Boyz [6] :
Puff said he wants to use the “Between The Sheets” sample. He said slice the sample. Chuckie and I worked on it - then we moved our studio to The Hit Factory studio, and we produced this song there. This song was actually written for Mr. Cheeks from The Lost Boyz. We gave this song to The Lost Boyz. And then something happened, and Puff said: “Bring that song back, take it from him.” We traded it for another track. Remember that song “Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimaz & Benz?”. This track Easy Mo Bee made for Craig Mack. He was supposed to come out after the single Flava In Ya Ear, but Craig didn’t like it. He could not rhyme for her or something. So in the end we traded this track for “Big Poppa”. Both of these songs became hits, so I think it was a good deal.
In the same issue, the former editor of The Source , Matteo "Matt Lyphe" Capoluongo (also known as Matty C), said that the idea with the sample belongs to Biggie:
I think that another important misconception regarding the creation of this album, in the production of this album, is that people think that Puffy invented these creative, memorable samples for Biggie to rhyme over them. Big himself was very smart, thinking about these samples. I remember exactly how he told me: “I am going to rhyme over this“ Bonita Applebum ”(the single of group A Tribe Called Quest of 1990, which included the sample of The Isley Brothers “ Between the Sheets ”)”. That was his idea. This is how “Big Poppa” appeared.
Heritage
In addition to being used in several films, the song was used by The LOX for the tribute "We'll Always Love Big Poppa" as a tribute to BIG, who was killed in 1997. Rapper Omarion sampled the words in his song “Let's Talk” (2012). The Spanish version of the chorus was used in an advertisement for Taco Bell's fast-food restaurants called “Grande Papi” (2013). Will Ferrell performed the comedy version of the song, portraying singer Robert Gulet in the episode of Saturday Night Live [7] . Metalcore band A Plea For Purging performed the song as a separate single. This song sounds in the first episode of the Netflix series. She needs it very much .
