Regan Smith ( born February 9, 2002 , Lakeville , Minnesota , USA ) is an American swimmer who specializes in backstroke and butterfly stroke . Two-time world champion in 2019 , the current champion of the planet at distances of 100 and 200 m on the back and in the combined relay 4 × 100 m.

Career
At a junior age, Regan achieved impressive results: at the debut World Cup in Budapest, the 15-year-old American entered the final race, in which she took seventh place [1] . A month later, the American swimmer became the two-time winner of the Indianapolis home world championship, winning the distance of 100 m on the back with the world record among juniors (59.11) and finishing first at 200 m [2] . The following season, Regan won the first award in adult competitions: at the Pacific Championships, a talented junior took third place at a distance of 200 m [3] .
At the 2019 World Championships in Korean Gwangju, an American became one of the main stars of the competition: on June 26, Regan first broke her junior world record in the preliminary race at a distance of 200 meters on the back (2.06.01) [4] , and in the semifinal she set a new world achievement, surpassing the record time of his titled compatriot Missy Franklin by 0.71 seconds (2.03.35) [5] . In the final, Smith again showed an excellent result (2.03.69) and for the first time in her career she won the world champion title [6] . On the final day of the championship, Regan took part in the 4 × 100 m combined relay and won the second gold medal, and also set two world records: the 17-year-old junior became the first woman who managed to swim out of 58 seconds at a distance of 100 m on her back (57, 57) [7] ; and the US team improved global achievement by 1.15 seconds (3.50.40) [8] .
