The Chinese Geographical Society (Chin. 中国 地理 анг ; The Geographical Society of China ) is a geographic public organization of China , founded in 1934. One of the oldest academic societies in China and one of the largest geographic societies in the world, with more than 20 thousand members. Since 1949, the Society is a member of the International Geographical Union .

The most important task of society is to popularize and disseminate geographical knowledge in China and the world.
History
The predecessor of the Chinese Geographical Society is the Chinese Land Society, founded in 1909 in Tianjin .
In 1934, the founder of the Chinese Land Society, Zhang Xiangwen and other scientists, initiated the creation and subsequently founded the Chinese Geographical Society.
In 1953, the first national congress of members of the Chinese Geographical Society was held in Beijing , at which the governing council and chairman of the society were elected. During this period, the society included about 500 members.
Since December 2018, the chairman of the Council of the Chinese Geographical Society is Chen Fahu, professor and full member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences .
Structure
Apart from headquarters, the Chinese Geographical Society has 31 regional branches in various provinces and autonomous regions of the PRC.
The society includes 22 commissions specializing in various areas of geographical science (economic geography; hydrography; physical geography; cartography and geoinformatics; health geography; city geography; tourism geography; population geography; cultural geography; political geography, etc.).
The company is engaged in publishing activities, including publishing about 18 permanent periodicals, of which 4 journals are published in English (the most famous of which is the Journal of Geographical Sciences).
