Description
The length of Haemadipsa picta is 13–33 mm. The diameter of the front suction cup is 1.3-2.5 mm, and the back - 2.5-3.7 mm. It is easily recognizable by the longitudinally striped reddish-brown dosum: a wide bluish-gray, yellow-greenish, or multicolored mid-paramedian field contains from three to five black or dark brown torn strips inside. There is also a white or pale yellowish longitudinal marginal strip with dark spots. The ventral part is evenly tan [1] [2] .
They feed mainly on medium and large sized mammals, including humans. They are found on bushes and grasses at a height of about 1 meter above the ground in humid tropical forests. They move quickly and actively, and even, as you know, fall on travelers from higher bushes or leaves. They are attached to the hands, arms, shoulders and even the neck of passers-by. The bites of this species are relatively painful and difficult to treat, therefore the general name is “stinging land leech” (“burning earth leech”) or “tiger leech” (“tiger leech”) [1] [2] .
