History
In 1957-1970, a two-year Higher Pedagogical School functioned in Shkodra, which in 1970 was transformed into a school with a three-year period of study, and in 1981 - into a four-year one. On May 28, 1991, by a decision of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Albania, the school was given university status and was named after Luidi Gurakuchi , an Albanian writer, poet, linguist, and national liberation activist.
The university currently mainly studies students from northern Albania, as well as from Montenegro , Kosovo and Northern Macedonia .
In the 2008/2009 academic year, 11,000 people studied at the university. The most popular specialties were law (1345 students), Albanian philology (1219) and finance (912).
The structure of the university currently includes 6 faculties, 26 branches, 21 departments. The teaching staff consists of about 710 people, of which more than 190 have the title of professor.
