Moers, Walter

After school, Walter Moers worked part-time, then worked as a trainee in the field of trade. At that time, he himself learned to draw.

Walter Moers does not like to give interviews and very rarely allows himself to be photographed, which has recently been justified: after the publication of Moers' book “ Adolf, the Nazi Pig, ” ridiculing Adolf Hitler , the right-wing radicals send letters with threats to Moers.

Stories for children

The first story about Captain Blaubera ( German Käpt'n Blaubär , literally "Captain Blue Bear") was released in 1988 and found its continuation in cartoons, books for children and audio performances. Another character of Moers, known to children from books and cartoons, is the all-knowing genius Shimauski ( German: Schimauski ), who finds answers to all possible and impossible questions. Šimauski, this time under the name of Professor Dr. Abdul Nachtigaller (in Russian “Soloviev”), and captain Blauber appear in books about the fictitious country of Zamonia ( German: Zamonien ), which are already designed for adults.

2 books of the cycle - “ 13½ lives of the captain named Blue Bear ” and “City of Dreaming Books” - have been translated and published.

Comics

Moers has been publishing her work since 1984. Comics , distinguished by irony and deliberate violation of political correctness , brought him first fame. Of the latest Moers comics, there is a series of comics about Deadman, the dead superhero published in Titanic in 2001-2002.

The most famous of his heroes:

• Little Scoundrel (lit. little ass ) is an intelligent and impudent little boy who does not put adults in anything.

• The Old Sack is a terminally ill pensioner in a wheelchair who sarcastically comments on the reality surrounding him.

• Adolf, the Nazi Pig is a satirical work that takes Adolf Hitler to the modern world, where he appears to be a rather miserable figure.

• Fönig ( German: Fönig , from König - king ) - the hero of the same story for adults about war and peace, blowjob and cunnilingus .

Zamonian novels

Novels, the action of which takes place in the fictional world of Zamonia . To date, there are 5 books in the cycle of tsamonic novels.

“13 and a Half Captain Blue Bear Lives”

In 1999, the first novel of the series was released, the scene of which was the fictional world of Zamonia: “13 and a half lives of the captain Blue Bear”. But this Blue Bear has little to do with the hero of the children's program, the bear grandfather, telling tales to grandchildren. In the novel, Blue Bear is young and addresses an adult reader with a subtle sense of humor. A special place in the novel is occupied by the fabulous world of Zamonia , the birthplace of countless monsters and brilliant scientists. The book contains a detailed map of Zamonia, according to which the reader can trace the journey of the protagonist. This complex world, full of irony and satirical cross-references, became the basis for further Zamonian novels. The book is replete with illustrations, all of them, like in almost all Walter Moers books, are the author's drawings.

Enzel and Crete

In the second Zamonian novel, the author is the dragon Hildegunst von Mutenmetz , and Walter Moers himself, as it were, plays the role of a translator from Zamonian to German. As the reader guesses from the title, the book is a parody of the famous German fairy tale “ Hanzel and Gretel ” about two children lost in the forest. Captain Blue Bear appears only occasionally, and the very tale stated in the title, beginning quite recognizably, soon no longer looks like anything.

Rumo and Miracles in the Dark

In the third book of this series, “ Rumo and Miracles in the Dark ” ( German: Rumo & Die Wunder im Dunkeln ), there are rather harsh episodes. For example, Cyclops characters feed on all sorts of creatures that inhabit Zamonia, and the more agile the victim is, the better. Cyclops devour the victim alive. And fencing duels , battles and instruments of torture are described quite bloodthirsty.

City of Dreaming Books

In 2004, the fourth book was published, “ The City of Dreaming Books, ” with Hildegunst (von) Mutenmetz (Miforez) as the author. At the end of the book, Walter Moers asks readers for advice on which book to “translate” to him as follows: the continuation of the adventures of Mutenmetz (Miforez) in the catacombs of Buchheim (Knigorod) or a new story about his adventures in the cemetery city of Dullsgard. For this book, Walter Moers received the Wetzlar Prize for the best fantastic work.

Horror Master

The name of the novel in German is “ Der Schrecksenmeister ” - a play on words (letters are rearranged in Schreckensmeister ). The fifth volume of the Zamonian novels was published in August 2007. This is supposedly also the book of Mutenmetz, translated by Moers from the Zamonian.

Labyrinth of Dreaming Books

On October 5, 2011, the sixth book of tsamonsky novels was released - "The Labyrinth of Dreaming Books ." This is a continuation of the book " City of Dreaming Books ." The plot of the novel takes place in the Book City, where, after 200 years, the main character of the book “ City of Dreaming Books ” Hildegunst (von) Mutenmetz (Miforez) returns. Apparently this is just the first part of the book, as the plot remains unfinished. The author has not yet reported anything about the release of the second book.

The Style of Camonic Novels

The special appeal of tsamonic novels is created by the play on words , hints , intertextual links and anagrams . The attentive reader will discover many anagrams of the names of great poets and writers (for example, the Goethe anagram: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe → Ojhann Golgo van Fontheweg ). Most of the poems in The City of Dreaming Books are altered poems by great authors, known to educated German readers.

A lot of visual techniques are also used. Many names and titles are interesting in how they are written. Often used printing tools, such as different pins and font sizes.
