Biography
Franz Federschmidt was born on February 21, 1894 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania .
He began practicing rowing in 1916 at the local Philadelphia club Pennsylvania Barge Club. He trained with his younger brother Erich Federschmidt . Because of World War I , he had to interrupt his sports career for three years and served in the medical emergency room.
At the end of the war, Federschmidt returned to rowing, entered the main team of the American national team and, thanks to a series of successful performances, was granted the right to defend the country's honor at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp . As part of the swing four-seat steering crew, which also included his brother Erich, rowers Karl Close , Kenneth Myers and helmsman Sherman Clark , successfully overcame the semifinal stage of the competition, with a large margin ahead of crews from Brazil and Czechoslovakia. In the decisive final race finished second, losing four seconds to a team from Switzerland, and thereby won the silver Olympic medal.
Having become a silver medalist, Franz Federschmidt together with his brother moved to another Philadelphian club, the Undine Barge Club, but soon decided to end his sports career. Subsequently worked as an engineer.
He died after a long struggle with colorectal cancer April 14, 1956 in Philadelphia at the age of 62 years.
