The early years
Hilde Levy was born in the German city of Frankfurt on May 9, 1909 [3] . Her father was Adolf Levy, director of sales for a metallurgical company, and her mother, Clara Levy, was a typographer. Hilde also had an older brother named Edwin. From an early age, Hilde studied music, knew how to play the piano . While in Bavaria , she listened to the performances of many musicians, including Richard Strauss and Elizabeth Schumann [4] .
Despite the fact that Hilde was Jewish, she did not practice her religion and did not join herself in the Jewish community [4] . Hilde was enrolled in the Augusta Victoria School (now Bettina school ), whose educational plan included compulsory religious education, which is why she had to attend classes with a local rabbi . This was the reason for Hilde’s attempts to avoid school attendance [5] .
Studying in high school, Hilde decided that she would become a scientist. She devoted her last academic year to a project on spectra and photography , which later became her thesis. In her class, Hilde was the only girl specializing in physics. After leaving school in April 1928, Hilda's father sent her to England for six months, where she studied English. In 1929, she entered the University of Munich . After receiving her doctorate , Hilde was admitted to the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry in Berlin , where she wrote a dissertation on the spectra of alkali metal halides under the supervision of Fritz Haber and Peter Pringsheim [3] [6] .
