Biography

Vincent Gallagher was born on April 30, 1899 in Brooklyn , New York .

Initially he entered Rutgers University , but in 1919 he transferred from there to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. Here he began to seriously engage in academic rowing, was in the local rowing team, repeatedly took part in various student regattas, in particular in the eight eight years in 1921 and won the Inter-University Rowing Association (IRA) championship twice.

The highest success in rowing at the international level was achieved in the 1920 season, when, while still a cadet of the academy, he joined the main team of the American national team and, thanks to a series of successful performances, was granted the right to defend the honor of the country at the Summer Olympics in Antwerp . In the swing eight with the helmsman, he successfully overcame the quarterfinal and semifinal stages of the competition, beating teams from Belgium and France, respectively. In the decisive final race, he was almost a second ahead of the rowers from the UK and thus won the Olympic gold medal.

After graduating from the Academy in 1922, Gallacher enlisted in the US Navy and made quite a successful career as a military officer. He retired from the armed forces in 1957 with the rank of commander.

Died June 27, 1983 in Miami , Florida , aged 84 years.
