History
Norderog was first mentioned in the annals in 1597 as “Norder Ough”. Since 1630, a permanent housing appeared on the hullig, in which the caretaker of the beach lived, and which was destroyed in 1634 by the flood of Burhardi . Later the family settled there, but their house was washed away by the sea during the February flood of 1825 . Since then, Norderog has become uninhabited. Today, Norderg is the only hullig who no longer has terps. The old terp was washed away. Since 1909, the hullig has been the property of Jordsand , whose goal is to create bird sanctuaries on the German North Sea coast.
Fauna and Flora
Norderog serves many rare seabirds as a nesting and resting place. The colony of spotted terns (Thalasseus sandvicensis) is of the greatest importance. In spring and early summer, there are up to 4000 breeding pairs per year. In addition, river and polar terns nest on the island. For a long time, there was the highest density of nesting magpie in the entire Gulf of Germany, but its number decreased after 2000. However, the importance of Norderog for the bird world is not only nesting, but also a resting place for birds. Sometimes, more than 50,000 seabirds live on the hullig and the nearby shallows of Norderzogzand.
