Plains can be divided into three parts. In the southern part is the city of Adelaide , the capital of South Australia . The area in the center is considered the "breadbasket" of South Australia with fields and vineyards located around the cities of Virginia and Angle Whale . In the northern part, cereals ( wheat , oats ) and rapeseed are mainly cultivated. Sheep breeding is also developed.
Tribes of Australian aborigines Kaunas lived on these plains before European settlement.
Adelaide plains are crossed by a large number of rivers and streams, most of which dry up in the summer months. The rivers include Oncaparing , Torrens , Little Para , the Gowler River , the Light River, and the Wakefield River .
