Early years and college
Born in Mercer Island, Washington, Snyder graduated from Mercer Island High School in 1985. Twice the state's basketball player of the year, Snyder led the team to victory in the state championship in 1985. [4] During this time, the Mercer Island School has reached # 1 in the United States . Snyder was selected as a McDonald's All-American player, becoming the first native of Washington state. [2] [5]
At Duke University, Snyder played point guard at the Duke Blue Devils from 1985 to 1989. Together with the "devils", Snider played in the NCAA Final Four three times in 4 years (1986, 1988 and 1989). In the second season, Queen became the main point guard. During the graduation season, Snider was elected captain of the team. [four]
He graduated from Duke University in 1989 in two specialties: philosophy and political science . [4] Then Snyder received a doctorate in law from Duke School of Law and a Master of Business Administration from the Fuqua School of Business in 1995. [four]
Career Coach
Los Angeles Clippers (1992–1993)
In the middle of his thesis, Snider spent the 1992/93 NBA season as an assistant to the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers .
Duke Blue Devils (1993–1999)
From 1993 to 1995, Snyder worked as an administrative assistant to the Duke Blue Devils coach Mike Krzhizhevski when he received his training degrees. After finishing his studies in 1995, Snider became a permanent assistant coach. In 1997, Duke appointed Snyder as deputy head coach. During his work here, Duke participated in the NCAA tournament in 1994 and 1999 and got into the Elite eight in 1998. Duke also won the ACC tournament in 1999. [6]
Missouri Tigers (1999–2006)
In 1999, Snyder accepted the position of head coach of the Missouri Tigers , the University of Missouri basketball team. [7]
In the first season, the Snyder team immediately got into the NCAA tournament, where they lost to North Carolina in the first round.
In the second season, the Tigers hit the NCAA again. In the first round, the team Snyder team beat the “ Georgia Bulldogs ”. It was the first Missouri victory in the NCAA tournament since 1995. But in the second round, the Tigers were stopped by the Duke team, the future winners of the 2001 NCAA tournament. At the end of the season, Snyder was named the newcomer coach of the year according to the magazine Basketball Times . [7]
In the summer of 2003, Snyder was an assistant coach of the US national team at the Pan American Games . [7]
In May 2004, Snyder was at the center of a scandal organized by the NCAA. The NCAA accused him of violating the recruitment, based on the fact of gifts to defender Rick Clemons. [8] In November, the program was set for a three-year probationary period after the NCAA Violations Committee decided that an assistant would buy food, provide transportation, and illegally contact recruits. The committee rejected the school’s allegations that violations of the rules were unintentional, and also dismissed allegations of serious violations, including Clemons’s statement that assistant coaches paid players money. [9] Later, Snyder admitted that sometimes the players ate at his home and gave Clemons clothes. [ten]
On February 10, 2006, Snyder resigned from the post of Missouri head coach after losing 26 points to Baylor Bears , which became the sixth in a row. [eleven]
Austin Toros (2007–2010)
After his departure from Missouri in 2006, Snyder initially abandoned coaching forever, [10] but in May 2007 he accepted the position of Austin Toros head coach from the NBA D-League . [12]
In the first season, the Snyder team won first place in the Southwestern Division and advanced to the D-League NBA Finals, losing to Idaho Stampid . In the second season, Snyder led Toros to 32 victories, was a coach at the 2009 D-League NBA All-Star Game in Phoenix , reached the semifinals and was named Coach of the Year by the D-League NBA. In his last season with Toros, Snyder won 32 victories again and reached the semifinals again.
During his three years in Austin, Snyder scored more victories and led more NBA players than any other D-League coach. [3]
Philadelphia Sevents Sixers (2010—2011)
On June 11, 2010, Snyder became the development coach for the players of the NBA team “ Philadelphia Seventy Sixers ”, working under the direction of Douglas Collins . [13] Shortly thereafter, Snyder began training future NBA newbies in training before the 2010 draft , including future Sixers player Evan Turner . [14] The 2010/11 Sixers season ended with a score of 41–41.
Los Angeles Lakers (2011–2012)
On July 1, 2011, the Los Angeles Lakers hired Snyder as an assistant to head coach Mike Brown . [15] In the season shortened because of the lockout , the “Lakers” finished the 2011/12 season in first place in the Pacific Division, recording the result 41–25. In the 2011 playoffs, the Lakers reached the semifinals of the Western Conference , losing there to Oklahoma City Thunder with Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant in five games.
CSKA Moscow (2012—2013)
July 8, 2012 BC CSKA Moscow hires Snyder as an assistant to the head coach Ettore Messina . [16] In that season, CSKA became the champion of Russia , the winner of the VTB United League , and also made it to the Euroleague Final Four in 2013 , losing in the semifinals to the future winner of the Euroleague to the Piraeus Olympiacos . Atlanta Hawks (2013–2014)
June 10, 2013, Atlanta Hawks hires Snyder as an assistant to head coach Mike Budenholzer . [18]
Yuta Jazz (2014 — present)
On June 6, 2014, the Uta Jazz team hired Snyder as the head coach. [3] Prior to Utah, Snyder already worked with Jazz's general manager, Dennis Lindsay, from 2007 to 2010, when Lindsay was an assistant to the GM San Antonio Spurs, and Snyder coached Austin Toros. On May 6, 2016, Utah announced a multi-year contract extension with Snyder. In June 2018, Snyder was a candidate for the NBA coach of the year award.
