Creation History

In the summer of 2017, Grimes confirmed that she was working on new music. At the beginning of 2018, Grimes shared information that she plans to record two records, one of which will have a lighter sound and will be the last release on the 4AD label , and the second is more experimental and dark.

In May 2018, the singer published the working names of her new songs on Instagram [4] , and a little later shared excerpts from two new tracks “4æm” and “Adore You”. [5] Later it became known that these tracks did not get into the artist's album.

In June 2018, Grimes appeared in an Apple commercial, Behind The Mac, in which she talked about the process of creating music, videos, and pictures on her MacBook . A demo of her new song “Thats What The Drugs Are For” [6] sounded in the video.

In early November 2018, Grimes announced on Twitter that new music was “inevitable” and that she had completed work on the cover of the new single. November 26, 2018 Grimes launched the site with a new merch in Russian, and also announced the new single “We Appreciate Power”, recorded in collaboration with the American singer HANA. The single premiered on November 29th. A video clip was also shot for the song, but its premiere was postponed indefinitely. On the same day, the demo versions of the songs “4æm”, “Death Angels” and “Dark Side” were merged into the network. According to the singer, the single “We Appreciate Power” was inspired by the work of the North Korean rock band Moranbong Band and was written on behalf of “supporters of artificial intelligence”. “Just listen to this song, and future AI rulers will see that you supported their idea and are less likely to remove your descendants,” the press release said. [7]

On January 10, 2019, the singer shares an excerpt from her new song “So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth” on Twitter and confirms that she will be included in her upcoming album. Grimes describes the song as a "very gloomy ballad" in the style of nu metal about the battle with the Balrog (a demonic creature in the universe of John Ronald Roel Tolkien) in the center of the Earth, "which is perhaps a" metaphor for sex "or just a song about insomnia [8] .

In April 2019, Grimes starred for FLAUNT magazine. In the video shot by the magazine, the singer sang a new song, presumably recorded for the upcoming album. [9] In an interview, the singer said that Miss Anthropocene will probably be her last album. She admitted that she was working on the record only because she was obliged to release an album under a contract with the label. Grimes also noted that it is much more convenient for her to work in the EP format, or to release songs immediately after their completion. The singer also spoke about her desire to abandon the idea of touring and send a hologram instead of herself because she is madly afraid of the stage and concerts [10] .

The album was announced on March 19, 2019 on the Grimes page on Instagram . In the description under the publication, C described the record as "a concept album about the anthropomorphic goddess who changes the climate." Grimes also added that each song will be “the epitome of human extinction shown through a demonic pop star.” The album's release is slated for fall 2019, but Grimes said she could release an EP or a few more singles before Miss Anthropocene [11] . Work on the album was completed in June 2019, and at the moment the recording is going through the mixing stage [12] .

On August 13, 2019, Grimes announced that her new single from the upcoming record will be released on September 13 [13] .
