Life and work

Born in the family of the engraver Thaddeus L'Aleleman, who came from an old family of engravers and artists; the artist was Zagmund’s uncle, Fritz L'Alemagne . The young man also received his first painting lessons in his uncle's workshop. Later he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts , in the classes of such masters as Christian Ruben and Karl von Blaas . Already in the years of study, Sigmund preferred thematically writing historical and military canvases. Since 1864, L'Alelemagne has been a member of the Vienna Union of Artists (the so-called Künstlerhaus Wien). In 1864 and 1866, he, as a martial artist, accompanied the Austrian army first in the Austro-Prussian-Danish war , and then on its campaign in Italy, during the third war of liberation there with the Austrian monarchy. He later completed work on the unfinished paintings of his uncle and the first teacher, Fritz L'Alleman .

Since 1883, Sigmund L'Alemagne has been teaching painting as a professor at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. In October 1907 he was a member of the commission for admitting students to the Academy, who rejected the application for admission by Adolf Hitler .

The artist was repeatedly awarded various prizes and medals for his work, including at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1867, as well as the Reichel Prize in 18766 and the Karl-Ludwig Medal in 1879. The artist's works were exhibited from Austria-Hungary also at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1878.
