Born in New York , studied with Karl Ziegler, then at the Curtis Institute with Orlando Cole . In his student years, he won the Naumburg Competition for Young Performers (1957). He played in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra , in 1964-1977 - the first cello. Since 1977, the first cello of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra . At the same time, he acts as a chamber musician: he recorded the album of Prokofiev’s cello sonatas (with pianist Janet Guggenheim), all works for cello and piano Rachmaninov , performed all sonatas for Beethoven’s cello and piano (together with Malcolm Frager ), etc.
