Football career
Born in Kirkcaldy . He began his football career at the Glasgow Ashfield Club. Since 1919 he played for the Airdrionians . He spent three seasons in the team, having played 68 matches in the league and cup during this time.
In 1922 he joined the amateur English club Maidstone United . Spent one season in the team.
In June 1923 he moved to another English club, Manchester United , for 1250 pounds [2] . At United then John Chapman , who had previously trained Ellis at the Airdrionians club, was the head coach [1] . David made his debut for United on August 25, 1923 in a Second Division match against Bristol City . [3] In total, in the 1923/24 season he spent 11 matches for the team (all within the league ).
In September 1924 he transferred to the Scottish club St. Johnstone for 500 pounds. He demanded from the club half of the amount of his transfer, but his request was rejected [1] . Spent two seasons at St. Johnston, playing a total of 33 matches and scoring 1 goal.
He later played for the English Bradford City and the Scottish Arthurly.
