Origin of title

From the stables of Vvedensky Bogoroditsky or Novinsky monastery [2] (see Novinsky Boulevard ), later the patriarchal stable yard

History

The street originated in the 17th century, on the right bank of the Presny ponds . At the end of the century, the Patriarchal Garden Settlement settled on the site of the extensive possessions of the Novinsky Monastery east of Presnya; the monastery continued to own arable land from Presnya to Khodynka . At the end of the 18th century, the surroundings of Presnya, the Three Mountains and Studentsa became a popular place for festivities; in 1806, the banks of Presnya were landscaped at public expense. In 1864 , the Moscow Zoo was opened on Bolshaya Presnenskaya ( Krasnaya Presnya Street ), and thirty years later at the end of Konyushkovskaya Street an agronomical station of a botanical garden was built. The building of the street itself remained mostly wooden.

In December 1905, battles between workers and government troops were fought on Presnya.

In the 1920s. Presnensky ponds were filled up, Presnya was hidden in an underground collector, and the Krasnaya Presnya football stadium was built on the site of ponds (north of Rochdelskaya street) in 1922 . In the early 2000s. there were plans to build in its place the Parliamentary Center of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, which did not receive development. Currently, it is planned to reconstruct the stadium under the training field for the 2018 World Cup [3] .

In the 1960s - 1980s, three notable buildings were built on Konyushkovskaya (the mailing address for all three is assigned to other streets):

  • in 1965 - 1970 the building of the CMEA , now occupied by the Moscow City Hall ( New Arbat , 36) was built
  • in 1965 - 1979 the House of Soviets of the RSFSR was built - now known as the White House (Building of the Government of the Russian Federation, Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment , 12)
  • US Embassy ("new" corps). The first phase of construction of the eight-story main building ( 1979 - 1985 ) was interrupted due to the identification by the Americans of the "operational-technical penetration" of the special services of the USSR. By decision of the US Congress, the building was sentenced to demolition - at the expense of American taxpayers. In fact, the special equipment put into the building was deactivated as far back as 1982 and the resumption of their work was unlikely. On December 5, 1991, the Soviet side gave the Americans a description of the pledged special means; in 1994 - 1999 , after partial demolition, the Americans completed the building - up to ten floors [4] .

In 1991 and 1993 , the events of the August putsch and the dispersal of the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Federation unfolded directly on Konyushkovskaya.

Notable buildings and structures

  • In the square, which bore the name of Pavlik Morozov until 1991, in the 20-30s of the 20th century there was a pond, which in winter turned into a skating-rink β€œMay 1st” [7]

In the house, in particular, lived RNII staff: Korolev , Langemak , Pobedonostsev , Tikhonravov , as well as pilots, the first Heroes of the Soviet Union : Levanevsky , Vodopyanov , Kamanin .
