Biography

John Schmitt was born December 23, 1901 in Philadelphia , PA .

He was engaged in rowing in the local Philadelphia club Pennsylvania Barge Club, in which he repeatedly became the winner and prize winner of the national championship.

The highest success in rowing at the international level was achieved in the 1928 season, when he joined the main team of the American national team and, thanks to a series of successful performances, was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the Summer Olympic Games in Amsterdam . In the program of oar steeringless doubles, along with Philadelphia club mate Paul MacDowell, he successfully overcame all the preliminary stages, then he was defeated by the German team at the semi-final stage. In the consolation race for third place, the Italian team defeated and thereby won the bronze Olympic medal.

With a height of 171 cm, Schmitt is considered one of the shortest rowers in the history of the American Olympic team in rowing.

He died on June 13, 1991 in the city of Largo , Florida , at the age of 89.
