The chess championships of the Republic of Macedonia (Northern Macedonia) for men have been held since 1946. After the Republic of Macedonia left Yugoslavia (in 1992), the competition was organized by the Chess Federation of Macedonia (now the Chess Federation of Northern Macedonia). From 1992 to 2011 20 tournaments were held. After the 2011 tournament, the federation abandoned the practice of holding a national championship and once a year organizes the so-called open championship of the Republic of Macedonia.

Macedonia Championships as part of Yugoslavia
The winner of the first championship of the Slovak Republic of Macedonia was master P. Bidev . In the period from 1946 to 1955. he won 4 titles. The record holder for the number of champion titles won by the Republic of Macedonia is international master J. Sofrevsky , who has won 16 tournaments. The youngest winner in 1966 was the future international master R. Nichevsky , who at that time was 20 full years old.
