The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Peter Alexandrovich Chicherin from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
By the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Colonel Chicherin commanded the Life Guards Dragoon Regiment , participated in many battles with the French, and after the Battle of Borodino he was in the partisan detachment of I. S. Dorokhov and acted on the rear communications of the French near Moscow . For the difference in the battle of Maloyaroslavets, he was promoted to major general , and for the battle of Krasny he was awarded the Order of St. George of the 3rd class. During the Overseas Campaigns of 1813 and 1814, Chicherin was also in many battles, especially distinguished himself in the Kulm battle , in the Battle of the Peoples near Leipzig , where he was wounded, and in the battle of Fer-Champenoise [2] .
Depicted in the general uniform of the Life Guards of the Dragoon Regiment, introduced in 1812. On the neck is visible the St. George ribbon , extending under the lapel of the uniform; on the left on the chest is a star of the Order of St. Anna of the 1st degree; below it, on the edge of the lapel, crosses of the Order of St. George of the 3rd class, the Prussian orders of the Red Eagle and Pur le Merit , as well as the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree; a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon , a cross of the Bavarian Military Order of Maximilian Joseph of the 3rd degree, a star of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree and under it the Kulm Cross [3] . Signature on the frame: P.A. Chicherin 2nd, General Mayor .
On August 7, 1820, Chicherin was included in the list of “generals whose service does not belong before the consideration of the Committee,” and on May 19, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. The Dow fee was paid on April 25, 1823 and June 21, 1827. The finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage on July 8, 1827. Since the previous delivery of the finished portraits to the Hermitage took place on October 18, 1826, the portrait of Chicherin can be considered written between the last two dates [4] . The estimated date of the portrait's writing contradicts Chicherin’s biographical data: on December 15, 1825 he was granted the title of Adjutant General [5] , but the portrait does not have adjutant-general attributes ( axelbant , imperial monogram on epaulettes ). A. A. Podmazo explains this discrepancy by the fact that there was another portrait of Chicherin by Dow, from which Dow himself made a copy for the Military Gallery at the turn of 1826-1827 [4] . The alleged prototype of modern researchers is unknown.
A. Podmazo in his book on the Military Gallery reproduces the portrait of Chicherin by R. Lefebvre from the collection of the State Hermitage , (oil on canvas, 73 × 60 cm, inventory number GE-5750) [6] , but does not accompany it with any explanation how this portrait can be associated with the work of Dow [4] . It is assumed that this portrait was painted in April – May 1814, when Chicherin was in Paris with occupying Russian troops [7] . By visual comparison, these portraits reveal little in common.
