The picture is a chest portrait of Lieutenant General Efim Ignatievich Chaplits from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .

Since the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Major General Chaplitz was the chief of the Pavlograd Hussars and commander of the cavalry corps in the 3rd Observational Army, distinguished himself in the battle of Kobrin , for the defeat of the Polish-French brigade J. Konopka under Slonim was promoted to lieutenant general , Further distinguished himself when crossing the Berezina , took Vilno and Kovno . During the Overseas Campaign of 1813, he fought in Poland and Prussia , distinguished himself at Königsvarta . In the campaign of 1814, he commanded the 3rd Corps of the Polish Army [2] .

Depicted in a general's uniform introduced for cavalry generals on April 6, 1814. On the neck there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 3rd degree, on board the uniform a cross of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree; a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon and stars of the orders of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree and St. Alexander Nevsky on the right chest. Signature on the frame: E. I. Chaplits, General Lieutenant [3] .

Despite the fact that on August 7, 1820, the Chaplitz Attestation Committee of the General Staff was included in the list of “generals deserving to be written in the gallery,” the actual decision to paint his portrait was made a little earlier. At this time, Chaplits was cavalry without a post, lived on his estate in Vitebsk and in February 1820 came to St. Petersburg to pose for Dow. The Dow fee was paid on March 24 and April 14, 1820. The finished portrait was taken to the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] .
