The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Ivan Alekseevich Khrushchov from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
During the Patriotic War of 1812, Major General Khrushchov was the chief of the Arzamas Dragoon Regiment and commanded the cavalry brigade in the detachment of K.O. Lambert , distinguished himself in the capture of Borisov and on Berezin . During the overseas campaigns of 1813 and 1814 he fought in Poland , Germany and France , especially distinguished himself in the battle of Fer-Champenoise . During the campaign, One Hundred Days again made a trip to France [2] .
Depicted in glasses, in a general's uniform, introduced for cavalry generals on April 6, 1814. On the left on the chest is a star of the Order of St. Anne of the 1st degree; on the neck there is a cross of the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle of the 2nd degree; on board the uniform the cross of the Order of St. Vladimir , 3rd class (worn with a violation of the rules of wearing, should be located on the neck above the foreign order); on the right is the cross of the Order of St. George of the 4th class, the ribbon of which is fastened with a pin with the inscription "For courage" and the image of a golden saber (the only such image in the portraits of the Military Gallery), as well as a silver medal "In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812" on St. Andrew's tape [3] . Signature on the frame: I. A. Khrushchov, General Mayor .
On August 7, 1820, the Committee of the General Staff for the Certification of Khrushchov was included in the list of "generals deserving to be written in the gallery" and on May 19, 1822, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. At this time, Khrushchov was already retired and permanently resided in Moscow ; it is not known whether he came to St. Petersburg and posed for the Dow or sent his portrait prototype for copying. The Dow fee was paid on April 25 and November 27, 1823. The portrait was taken to the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] .
V.K. Makarov found this portrait completely devoid of similarities with typical Dow works [5] . The guardian of British painting in the Hermitage, E. P. Renne, supported his opinion [3] .
