Events

  • On June 22, after a trial organized by the Inquisition , 69-year-old Galileo Galilei was recognized as "highly suspected of heresy" for disobeying the church ban on heliocentrism . Galileo’s book “ Dialogue on the Two Systems of the World ” was banned, and Galileo, after ostentatious repentance, was sentenced to life imprisonment, which was soon replaced by life-long house arrest. In 1992, the Catholic Church recognized the condemnation of Galileo as a mistake [1] .
  • The Leiden Observatory , the oldest operating university observatory in the world, was opened [2] .
  • In Russia, in the upper Kama , where copper deposits were discovered near Mount Kuzhgur near Solikamsk , the first copper smelter in Russia was built. In 1635 he was transferred to the Pyskorsky Monastery on the Kagora River and has since been called the Pyskorsky Plant [3] .
