History

In the early decades of the 20th century, the municipality of the Italian capital, Rome, and the Italian government, paying tribute to the Latin origin of the Romanian people, presented Romania with four copies of the Capitoline Wolf , which were installed in the cities of Bucharest (September 7, 1906, in honor of the 40th anniversary of the coronation of King Carol I and the 1800th anniversary of the Roman conquest of Dacia ), Cluj-Napoca (September 28, 1921, in memory of the unification of Transylvania and Bukovina with Romania in 1918 ), Chisinau (1921, in memory of the unification of Bessarabia with Romania in 1918 ) and Timisoara (23 April 1926, pa crush the Latin ethnic community of the two peoples ). Already in Romania, copies of these four statues were made, which were installed in the cities and villages of Alba-Julia , Blazh , Brad , Brasov , Constanta , Cristesti Chicheului , Dezh , Galati , Yernut , Lesha , Ludush , Maeru , Nesaud , Sachele , Satu Mare , Sighisoara , Tirgu Mures , Tarnaveni , Toplitsa , Turda , Zaleu , Regin , Gerla [1] [2] [4] .

The grand opening of the monument took place on April 23, 1926 in the presence of 10,000 people. The opening was attended by Mayor Timisoar Samuel Shagovichi, Minister of Religious Affairs of Romania Vasily Goldis , Minister of Labor of Romania, Grigory Trancu-Yasi and delegates to the Italian Prime Minister Benito Mussolini [1] [3] [4] . The opening speech was delivered by the Consul of Italy in Timisoara Giulio Cesare Codec. The celebrations came with the complete exclusion from them of any role of the former mayor Timisoar Luciana Djordjevici, who was forced to resign on April 17 in an atmosphere of tense political situation in the country [3] [4] [5] [6] .

After the Second Vienna Arbitration (1940), Hungary received Northern Transylvania from Romania, 40% of the population were Hungarians, Timisoara became the place of demonstrations, rallies and protests [3] [4] . Since Italy, led by Benito Mussolini, supported the territorial claims of Hungary, the Capitoline Wolf monument caused discontent among protesters who shouted slogans in banat : “Duce, Duce, come, take your bitch and do everything with her!” As a result of the protests, the monument was dismantled and temporarily moved from the city center [6] [7] .

In December 2012, the statue received night art lighting [6] .
