John Wood ( born John Wood ; February 17, 1894 - September 9, 1971 ) is a Scottish footballer . Known for his performances for a number of Scottish clubs and for English Manchester United in the 1910s and 1920s [1] [2] [3] [4] .

Football career
A native of , Fife , John Wood began his career at the Hibernian Club in Scotland. In the 1913/14 season, he played 13 matches and scored 3 goals in the Scottish Championship. During World War I, he played for the Black Watch football team of the 3rd battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland [5] . After the war, he continued to play for the Hibernian. In total, he played 63 matches for the team and scored 10 goals [5] .
Later he played for the Scottish teams Dunfermline Athletic and Lochgely United. In June 1921 he became a player of Dumbarton . He made his debut for the club on August 20, 1921 in a championship match against Kilmarnock . Four days later, he scored his first goal for the team in a game against Hamilton Academic . In total, in the 1921/22 season, he scored 25 goals in the league for Dumbarton, including four doubles and one hat-trick [6] .
In May 1922 he moved to the English club Manchester United for 1750 pounds [4] . Debuted for the club in the first match of the 1922/23 season against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford Stadium; the match ended with the victory of United with a score of 2: 1 thanks to the goals of Joe Spence and John Wood [7] . The goal in the debut match for United was the only one for Wood: he played for the team another 14 matches in the league and 1 in the FA Cup , but did not score more goals [8] . His last match in the main team was the game of the FA Cup against Bradford City [9] . At the end of the season, Wood left the club.
In June 1923 he returned to Scotland, becoming a player in St. Mirren . He spent a season and a half in the club, playing 32 matches and scoring 18 goals. During the 1924/25 season, he changed the club, becoming a player of East Sterlingshire , who played in the Second Division of the Scottish Football League . Spent 40 matches for the club and scored 33 goals.
In 1926 he changed several clubs, briefly playing for Hamilton Academic and Cowdenbeat , until he became a player in the club of the second division of the Scottish Championship East Fife , where he spent the next three seasons (played 83 matches, scored 67 goals). He spent the 1928/29 season at the Alloa Athletic Club (14 matches, 7 goals), after which he completed his career.
