The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Pavel Petrovich Turchaninov from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
By the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Major General Turchaninov was the chief of the Olonets Infantry Regiment and commanded the 2nd brigade of the 22nd Infantry Division, was in the corps of General F.V. Osten-Sacken and fought in Volyn against the auxiliary Austro-Saxon corps. During the campaigns abroad in 1813 and 1814 he distinguished himself in the battle of Bauzen , then commanded the 22nd Infantry Division and distinguished himself in many battles in Saxony and in France [2] .
Depicted in the general's uniform, introduced for infantry generals on May 7, 1817. On the right on the chest is a star of the Order of St. Anne of the 2nd degree with diamonds; on the neck there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 3rd class; on board the uniform are crosses of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree, the Prussian orders of Pur le Merit and the Red Eagle of the 2nd degree; a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon on the right chest, a cross of the Swedish Military Order of the Sword of the 4th degree and a star of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 2nd degree [3] . Signature on the frame: P.P. Turchaninov 1st, General Mayor .
On August 7, 1820, the Committee of the General Staff for Attestation of the Turchanins was included in the list of "generals deserving to be written in the gallery" and on November 11, 1821, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. Turchaninov at that time commanded the 13th Infantry Division, stationed in the central provinces of the Russian Empire, and on November 12, 1821, a letter was sent to him from the Inspectorate Department of the War Ministry : “His portrait was commanded to the painter Dove, therefore, if he deigns to arrive in St. Petersburg then do not leave to have a date with Dove . " It is known that he came to the capital in July 1825, then he met with Dow. However, the Dow fee was paid much earlier - November 27, 1823, and the finished portrait arrived at the Hermitage much later: January 21, 1828 [4] . The guardian of British painting in the Hermitage, E. P. Renne, points out that since Turchaninov’s surname is indicated in the documents on portraits in most cases without initials, there may be confusion in the dates of adoption of Major General Andrei Petrovich Turchaninov with the portrait [3] .
In 1848, in the workshop of K. Krai, based on a drawing of I. A. Klyukvin , a dated lithograph was made, published in the book “Emperor Alexander I and His Companions” and subsequently repeatedly reproduced [5] .
