The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Fyodor Ivanovich Talyzin from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .
Since the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Major General Talyzin was retired, after the invasion of Napoleon, he organized the Moscow militia and was enlisted in the military service with the appointment of the chief of the 3rd Jaeger regiment of the Moscow militia, at the head of which he participated in the Battle of Borodino . Then he commanded the 2nd brigade of the 27th Infantry Division, distinguished himself in the battle of Maloyaroslavets . During the Overseas Campaign of 1813, he fought in Prussia and Saxony , distinguished himself in the battles of Kalisch , Dresden and Reichenbach, commanded the 27th Infantry Division, at the head of which he crossed the Rhine and entered the borders of France [2] .
Depicted in the general's uniform, introduced for infantry generals on May 7, 1817. On the left on the chest is a star of the Order of St. Anne of the 1st degree with diamonds; on the neck there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 3rd class; on board the uniform crosses of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree and the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle of the 2nd degree; a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon on the right chest, a bronze noble medal “In Memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the Vladimir ribbon and a star of the Order of St. Vladimir, 2nd class. On the back of the painting are inscriptions: Talysin and Geo Dawe RA pinxt [3] . Signature on the frame: Ѳ. I. Talyzin, General Mayor .
On August 7, 1820, the Committee of the General Staff for Attestation Talyzin was included in the list of "generals deserving to be written in the gallery" and on March 6, 1824, Emperor Alexander I ordered his portrait to be painted. Talyzin himself from the Inspectorate Department of the Ministry of War was informed of this order only almost a year later - on February 21, 1825. At that time, he commanded the 11th Infantry Division, stationed in Little Russian provinces, and it is not known whether he himself came to St. Petersburg or sent his portrait for copying. The Dow fee was paid on October 16, 1826 and June 21, 1827. According to A. A. Podmazo, the finished portrait was accepted into the Hermitage on July 8, 1827 [4] . E. P. Renne claims that the portrait entered the Hermitage in 1825 [5] , in this case she confuses it with another work by the Dow from the Military Gallery - with “ Portrait of Alexander Ivanovich Talyzin ”, which really entered the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 .
