The picture is a chest portrait of Major General Alexander Ivanovich Talyzin from the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace [1] .

Since the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Major General Talyzin was retired, after Napoleon's invasion he organized the Moscow militia and was enlisted in the military service with the appointment of chief of the 2nd Jaeger regiment of the Moscow militia, at the head of which he participated in the Battle of Borodino . During the Overseas Campaign of 1813, he fought in Prussia and Saxony , commanded the 2nd Brigade of the 7th Infantry Division. In 1814 he distinguished himself in France in the battles of La Rotier and La Ferte [2] .

Depicted in the general's uniform, introduced for infantry generals on May 7, 1817, a greatcoat was thrown over his shoulder. On the left on the chest is a star of the Order of St. Anne of the 1st degree; on the neck there is a cross of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree; on board the uniform a cross of the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle of the 2nd degree; on the right side of the chest there is a cross of the Order of St. George of the 4th class, a silver medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the St. Andrew’s ribbon and a bronze noble medal “In memory of the Patriotic War of 1812” on the Vladimir ribbon . On the back of the picture there is an inscription: Talysin 2 [3] . Signature on the frame: A. I. Talyzin, General Mayor .

Despite the fact that on August 7, 1820, the Committee of the General Staff for Attestation Talyzin was included in the list of "generals deserving to be written in the gallery", the actual decision took place earlier than this date, since on March 15, Emperor Alexander I ordered the portrait of Talyzin to be painted. The Dow fee was paid on April 14 and June 30, 1820. According to A. A. Podmazo, the finished portrait was accepted into the Hermitage on September 7, 1825 [4] . The guardian of British painting in the Hermitage, E. P. Renne claims that the portrait entered the Hermitage in 1827 [5] , in this case she confuses it with another work by the Dow from the Military Gallery - with “ Portrait of Fyodor Ivanovich Talyzin, ” which really entered the Hermitage July 8, 1827.
