History

In September 1972, the Soviet authorities blew up the Church of St. Dimitry, which was located in the city center. 14-year-old Dmitry Kirioglo pulled out two surviving icons from under the ruins [1] .

In the late 1980s, Dimitri Kirioglo returned to Chadyr-Lungu, who by then had already graduated from the Moscow Theological Academy . In 1988, he collected hundreds of signatures in support of a petition to the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR for permission to build a temple. The petition was granted, but the land was allocated not in the city center, but on the outskirts near the cemetery. The walls of the newly-built temple were painted by himself about Demetrius, together with his wife Xenia. O. Dimitri also made a sketch of the 17th century Balkan carving iconostasis, which was then made by masters from Ukraine [1] .

On October 7, 2000, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church decided to convert the St. Demetrius Parish into a convent [2] . On July 27, 2009, the nun Elisaveta (Popova) was appointed abbess of the monastery [3] .

In 2014, landslides began to threaten the monastery complex. Then the monastery spent about 400 thousand lei to strengthen the land around the complex, but three years later, in the spring of 2017, the concrete pillars collapsed and the monastery was again threatened with destruction [4] . By the end of 2017, the ravine around the monastery was reinforced again, this time with the support of the authorities of Gagauzia [5] .

As of 2019, 20 natives live in the monastery. The monastery church has two thrones: in the name of the holy great martyr Demetrius of Solunsky and in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker . Near the temple there is a spiritual and educational center, a belfry with bells, cells and a utility building. Nearby are monastic fields and vineyards with a total area of 5 hectares [1] . The monastery has two icons from the old St. Demetrius Church and an old copy of the Herbovets Icon of the Mother of God found in the well [6] .
