The library of the educational institution “Vitebsk State Order of Friendship of Peoples Medical University” provides the educational, scientific and educational processes of the university with up-to-date information.

History
The history of the library of Vitebsk State Medical University begins in November 1934, when the Vitebsk stronghold of the correspondence medical institute was transformed into a medical school with full-time students. In December 1934, textbooks for students were acquired, which became the basis of the library fund. Vitebsk medical school did not have a special room, the departments were dispersed throughout the city. The library was located on the ground floor of a wooden building of a former church building along Kommunisticheskaya Street (Botanical Garden).
During the years of occupation, the library was completely destroyed. Her recovery began after the war. By the end of 1946, the library stock amounted to 5600 copies. The fund was replenished at the expense of the gifts of various institutions and organizations, including the Vitebsk Regional Health Department, the Mogilev Medical School, the 1st Moscow and 2nd Leningrad Medical Institutes, the State Central Scientific and Medical Library (Moscow). The library at that time served 420 readers. She had 3 employees.
The restoration of the fund was facilitated by the receipt from 1947, according to the order of the USSR Ministry of Health, of textbooks and an obligatory copy from the collector of scientific libraries (Moscow). By the end of 1950, the library stock amounted to 30,000 copies. The number of readers was 940. The staff consisted of 5 employees.
In 1959, the library together with the institute moved to a new building on Frunze Ave. (currently it is the main building of the university), where it occupied an area of 1100 sq.m., a student reading room with 150 seats and a room for researchers for 10 seats were opened places
In 1960, the library distinguished departments of acquisition and processing, maintenance, reference and information department.
In these years, library and bibliographic services are being improved, and classes on the basics of library and bibliographic knowledge begin to be held for students.
In 1981, the library moved to new areas in the constructed laboratory and theoretical building, where a reading room for students with 70 seats and a room for researchers at 24 seats were opened.
In 1997, a subscription to the educational literature of the Faculty for the Training of Foreign Citizens was organized in the specialties of "General Medicine" and "Pharmacy", and in 2001 - in the specialty of "Dentistry".
In 1997, a specialized reading room of periodicals was allocated from the general reading room, and in 1998, a room for researchers.
The introduction of automation in library processes began with the acquisition in 2002 of the professional AIBS program MARC-SQL version 1.6. The cataloging module was the first to be introduced and in 2003, the creation of an electronic catalog began.
In 2003, the department of computerization of library processes was allocated.
An electronic library was opened for 24 user workstations.
In 2010, the library moved to a new building built on an individual project, equipped with modern equipment and communications. It offers readers a subscription to educational literature, a subscription to scientific and fiction literature, a general reading room, as well as specialized reading rooms of electronic resources, periodicals, researchers, foreign literature, and rare books. Starting September 1, 2015, the transition of service departments to paperless technology “electronic reader form” (e-form) was completed. Implemented an electronic order. AIBS MARC-SQL version 1.17 is operated.

At the present stage
The library provides its readers with traditional and electronic information resources and services. The library fund exceeds half a million copies of publications and unpublished documents of various types and types, includes educational, scientific, reference, fiction, magazines and newspapers, collections of scientific papers, monographs, dissertations and abstracts of dissertations, research reports, electronic documents.
Students and teachers have the opportunity to access the Internet for free.
Electronic information resources are accumulated by a repository in which electronic versions of educational and methodological and scientific publications issued at the university, scientific journals and newspapers, as well as video lectures are predominantly publicly available.
The library maintains a number of bibliographic databases of its own generation, and is also a participant in projects to create corporate electronic information resources: the interstate project MARS ARBICON, the republican projects BelAR and the “Scientists of Belarus”.
The electronic catalog is available on the Internet. The teaching staff has the opportunity to work with the database "Book Supply" via the Internet. There is access to world scientific databases Springer, Scopus. The library has access to the Cochrane Library resource. Through the Virtual Reading Room of the National Library of Belarus, access to the EBSCOhost database package is licensed. Students, faculty, students of the FPKiPK, doctors of the city and region have the opportunity to access the electronic library of “Student Advisor”, the electronic medical library “Doctor's Advisor”, the database of legal information “Business Info”.
Books that are not in the fund can be obtained by interlibrary loan (MBA), copies of articles from magazines can be ordered through the electronic document delivery service (EDD).
The library issues newsletters of new publications and periodicals, bibliographic indexes.
The rare book fund exceeds 1000 copies. and includes publications from the second half of the 19th century. The oldest book of the foundation “Anatomical and Surgical Tables, printed by the highest deign and bounties of His Majesty Emperor Nicholas I” by Ilya Buyalovsky was published in St. Petersburg in 1852. "Clinical lectures prof. G. A. Zakharyin "released in 1863 in Moscow.
The library serves more than 16,000 readers annually; book issuance exceeds 600,000 copies. On the day of the library’s division, its website and repository are visited by an average of more than 1,000 people.
There is a website, library accounts on social networks vKontakte , Twitter and Facebook . A virtual help desk “Ask a bibliographer” and a repository work through the site.
The library also serves practitioners in the city and region. The library is the coordination and methodological center of the network of medical libraries in the Vitebsk region.
