Events

  • The Dutch engineer Cornelius Drebbel built and tested (in London) the world's first operational submarine made of leather-covered wood [1] .

Publications

  • Copernicus ’s book , “ On the Rotation of the Celestial Spheres, ” banned by the Catholic Church in 1616 , was edited by experts from the Congregation Index of Forbidden Books . Alterations were made in nine places where the Earth’s motion was referred to as a real fact (and not as a mathematical device), after which the book was recognized as authorized for reading provided that the indicated “corrections” were made to the text. Nevertheless, the book of Copernicus remained in the Index of Prohibited Books and was removed from there only in 1835 [2] :
  • The founder of empiricism, Francis Bacon, published his main work, the treatise The New Organon . He described a new understanding of the scientific method, relying on inductive knowledge, won many followers and had a significant impact on the further development of science and philosophy [3] .
  • Posthumously published the fundamental geographical atlas " Atlante geografico d'Italia ", prepared by Giovanni Antonio Magini .
